Just an hour from Lisbon, Lourinhã is a municipality steeped in History, which begins many millions of years ago, when dinosaurs lived here.
“Land of Dinosaurs”
And because of that, it is the Portuguese capital of dinosaurs, incredible, isn’t it!?! The “Dino Parque” which opened in 2018, is now an important and fun attraction, receiving visitors from all over the Country. As “the largest open-air museum in Portugal”, this theme park features more than 180 models of different species, all in real scale, divided by several periods in the History of the Earth.
“Battle of Vimeiro”
And many millions of years later, here in the municipality, exactly in “Vimeiro”, on August 21, 1808, the “Battle of Vimeiro” was fought during the 1st French or Napoleonic Invasion of Portugal, in the ambit of the Peninsular War (1807 – 1814).
In this battle, the Anglo-Portuguese forces commanded by Lieutenant-General Sir Arthur Wellesley, and the French forces commanded by General Junot were confronted. The battle resulted in a victory for the Anglo-Portuguese forces and the end of the 1st French Invasion.
The “Battle of Vimeiro Interpretation Center (CIBV)” shows the episodes that marked one of the most remarkable periods in our country. In addition to the battlefield, visitors also get to know the weapons, uniforms, and documents of the time.
Also, among other very relevant historical architectural heritage, highlight to:
“Church of Santa Maria do Castelo”
The church was built in the second half of the 14th century, it is the most important religious temple in the county, it has Gothic characteristics and is dedicated to Santa Maria.
“Paimogo Fort”
The Fort of Nossa Senhora dos Anjos de Paimogo, also known as “Fort of Paimogo” or “Fort of Lourinhã” rises in a dominant position on the beach of “Paimogo”.
Built from 1674, by order of D. António Luís de Menezes, Marquis of Marialva, a hero of the War of the Restoration of Independence, to defend the coastal range, which extended from Peniche to Cascais, integrating the second line of defense of the bar of the Tagus River.
“Beaches”
Certainly, being Lourinhã on the coast of Portugal, you can expect a smell of the sea or the wild rawness of the coast, which stretches for 12 km. However, the surprise is total and so we find beaches all over the county and without exhausting them, focus on “Praia do Areal” or “Praia da Areia Branca”, in the center of the village.
However, others remain authentic secrets for those who are not from the region. For example, the beaches of “Zimbral”, “Valmitão2, “Vale Frade” and “Porto Dinheiro”. Shush….! Come over.
“Old Brandy DOC Lourinhã”
Finally, after a meal accompanied by a coffee, you should have an old brandy or an “Aguardente”, the “Lourinhac”! This is because, Lourinhã together with Armagnac and Cognac (French), are the only three regions demarcated with old brandy, in the World.
“Aguardente DOC da Lourinhã” is a top-quality digestive drink, topaz color, intense and fruity aroma, with notes of vanilla, coffee, and nuts. “Cheers!”
A Pouco Conhecida Lourinhã!
A apenas uma hora de Lisboa, a Lourinhã é um concelho carregado de História, que começa há muitos milhões de anos, quando os dinossauros por aqui viviam.
“Terra de Dinossauros”
E por isso, é a capital portuguesa dos dinossauros, incrível, não!?! O “Dino Parque” aberto em 2018, é agora uma importante e divertida atracção, recebendo visitantes de todo o País. Como “o maior museu ao ar livre de Portugal”, este parque temático apresenta mais de 180 modelos de diferentes espécies, todos em escala real, divididos por vários períodos da História da Terra.
“Batalha do Vimeiro”
E muitos milhões de anos depois, aqui no concelho, exactamente no Vimeiro, em 21 de Agosto de 1808, foi travada a Batalha do Vimeiro durante a I Invasão Francesa ou Napoleónica de Portugal, no âmbito da Guerra Peninsular (1807 – 1814).
Nesta batalha defrontaram-se as forças anglo-lusas comandadas pelo tenente-general Sir Arthur Wellesley, e as forças francesas comandadas pelo general Jean-Andoche Junot. A batalha resultou numa vitória das forças anglo-lusas e o fim da I Invasão Francesa.
O “Centro de Interpretação da Batalha do Vimeiro (CIBV)” dá a conhecer os episódios que marcaram um dos períodos mais marcantes do nosso País. Além do campo de batalha, os visitantes ficam ainda a conhecer o armamento, fardamento e documentos da época.

“Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo”
Igreja edificada na segunda metade do século XIV, é o templo religioso mais importante do concelho tem características góticas e é dedicado a Santa Maria.
“Forte de Paimogo”
O Forte de Nossa Senhora dos Anjos de Paimogo, também conhecido como Forte de Paimogo ou Forte da Lourinhã ergue-se em posição dominante sobre a praia de Paimogo.
Erguido a partir de 1674, por ordem de D. António Luís de Menezes, Marquês de Marialva, herói da guerra da Restauração da independência, para defesa do intervalo litoral, que se estendia de Peniche até Cascais, integrando a segunda linha de defesa da barra do rio Tejo.
“Praias”
Com certeza que, sendo a Lourinhã no litoral de Portugal, é de esperar um cheirinho de mar ou a crueza selvagem da costa, que se estende por 12 kms. Porém a surpresa é total e assim, encontramos Praias por todo o concelho e sem as esgotar, enfâse para a Praia do Areal ou a Praia da Areia Branca, no centro da vila.
Todavia, outras continuam autênticos segredos, para quem não é da região. Por exemplo, as praias do Zimbral, Valmitão, Vale Frade e Porto Dinheiro. “Chiuuuuuu….!”. Visite.
“Aguardente DOC Lourinhã”
Por fim, e claro para “assentar bem” após a refeição acompanhada de um café, uma Aguardente, a “Lourinhac”! Isto porque, conjuntamente com Armagnac e Cognac (francesas), e Lourinhã são as três únicas regiões demarcadas de aguardente vínica do mundo.
A Aguardente DOC da Lourinhã é uma bebida digestiva de qualidade superior, de cor topázio, aroma intenso e frutado, com notas de baunilha, café e frutos secos. “Saúde!”
